CHP Officer Injured

The California Highway Patrol reports:

CHP Santa Rosa Area Officer injured in traffic collision US-101 NB / Todd Rd. Early Sunday AM

On Sunday at approximately 8:00 a.m, a CHP officer on patrol on US-101 Northbound south of Todd Rd. made an enforcement stop on the right shoulder. The officer contacted the driver and returned to his patrol vehicle. The officer was looking into the passenger side on the patrol car at a computer screen. A Mitsubishi Montero was driving northbound approaching the scene at approximately 55-65 mph. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Mitsubishi allowed the vehicle to turn right and run off of the roadway. The front of the Mitsubishi struck the right rear of the patrol vehicle. This impact caused the officer to be struck by the patrol vehicle and he was thrown inside. The patrol vehicle was propelled forward and to the left, striking the original violator’s vehicle. The patrol car came to rest blocking the middle lane. The original motorist who had been pulled over assisted the officer out of the patrol vehicle and brought him to the right shoulder. The officer suffered two broken legs. The driver of the Mitsubishi, Rachel Garris, 22, of Corning, suffered moderate injuries. Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as a factor. All lanes were blocked for a brief time. The two right lanes were reopened at 3:02 PM following emergency roadway repair by Caltrans for a defect caused by this collision.
