YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED IN MAY:

When a local educator realized that several of her young students were writing stories about not having enough food at home, she reached out to Second Harvest Food Bank for help. Thanks to you, her school now proudly distributes fresh produce to over 100 families each month.

"If Second Harvest didn’t exist? WOW, my students would really suffer. My program has such a small budget... We really depend on Second Harvest and couldn't be more grateful." – Lori, After School Education and Safety Coordinator at Cabrillo School District

Without your help, programs like Lori's will be at risk. To ensure local kids don't go hungry, the "Stand up for kids" Fundraising Council is matching every $1 you donate with $2.

The May 31st deadline to triple your impact is approaching quickly. Take action today!

DIVAS® HALF MARATHON & 5K SERIES RETURNS TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY FOR THE THIRD YEAR

Series expected to set record high registration numbers and bring thousands to Bay Area on race weekend

MIAMI, FL- The Divas® Half Marathon & 5K Series is excited to return to the San Francisco Bay Area for a third year on June 1, 2014.The event, known for boas, tiaras, bubbly and sparkling finisher medals, is expected to break its previous registration record and bring an estimated 6,500 runners and 1,000 spectators to the Bay Area on race weekend.

“The registration numbers for this third running of the Divas® Half Marathon & 5K Event in San Francisco Bay, California are amazing!” says Continental Event and Sports Management National Race Director, Gaby Pozo. “Thanks to the hard work of the San Mateo Convention & Visitors Bureau and the cities of San Mateo, Burlingame and Foster City, this event will be spectacular and from the looks of it, the largest in its brief 3-year history. The rise in participation shows that the course is absolutely breathtaking and one worth experiencing again and again as many participants will be back for the second or third time.”

This year, Auburn, California resident, Jamie Quadra, will be joining in on the Divas® fun. Jamie was paralyzed by a stroke and completely lost the ability to walk eight years ago. “I started running to celebrate the 5th anniversary of my stroke survival” said Jamie. “I run because a doctor told me that I would never run again.” When asked why she chose the Divas® event, she replied, “I chose the Divas® Half Marathon so that I could get dressed up with my runner girls and have a great time out on the course. Pace is not important to me. For me, one percent, 100 times can get me to 100 percent, no matter what the odds. My hair grew back after they shaved it for surgery, all paralysis has been overcome except in my left hand, and I can't wait to be a Diva!”

The half marathon will begin on Sunday June 1, 2014 at 7:00 AM with the 5K following at 7:15 AM. Both races will start and finish at Bayside Park in Burlingame, California. The event will be preceded by a two day Health and Fitness Boutique at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront.

SATURDAY June 7 -  Disaster Preparedness Day

This year San Mateo County celebrates the 10th Annual San Mateo County Disaster Preparedness Day which is held in conjunction with, and hosted by, the San Mateo County Fair.

This year’s Disaster Preparedness Day will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m during the San Mateo County Fair located at 1346 Saratoga Avenue in the City of San Mateo.  Parking and admission to the event and to the San Mateo County Fair are free to those who arrive before 11 a.m.

Please feel free to forward this invitation and the attached flyers in English and Spanish to your contact lists, e-newsletter groups, website, friends and family.

The feedback we receive from residents who attend this family oriented event is overwhelmingly positive as they have the opportunity to take advantage of free CPR classes, numerous presentations related to disaster preparedness education and a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Exercise.

Last year, the event set an attendance record with over 1,000 families and 3,500 residents in attendance.  With additional exhibits and participants - the 10th Annual Disaster Preparedness Day is expected to be our largest yet!

In 2005, following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the costliest and one of the most deadliest natural disasters in the history of the United States, many federal, state and local agencies put themselves on high alert.  Since then attention to disaster preparedness has waned.  In light of this, and in celebration of the 10th Annual San Mateo County’s Disaster Preparedness Day, we are hoping to make this event a big success and I hope you can join us on Saturday, June 7th, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for this fun event.

Sincerely,

/s/ Supervisor Adrienne J. Tissier

FUTURE EVENT: - U. S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier is proud to announce:

I am also proud to announce the first annual Congressional STEM Academic Competition, a.k.a. the “House App Contest.” This new competition is designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Representing Silicon Valley – a hotbed of innovation – has convinced me of the importance of such initiatives that promote investment in STEM education, as well as legislation like H.R. 2426, the Educating Tomorrow’s Engineers Act, of which I am a proud cosponsor. We must prepare our students for employment in the high-tech industry and enhance American competitiveness in the global economy.

The House APP contest is also open to students eligible to enroll in high schools located in the 14th District, and to teams of up to four if at least two students reside in the 14th District. Students must register at StudentAppChallenge.house.gov and create an account at ChallengePost.com by April 30, 2014. Students can visit ChallengePost any time before then to submit their contact information, completed release form, and final app entry. Students can learn more about the competition and find resources for students and teachers on my website. For any additional information, contact Kenneth Dowling at kenneth.dowling@mail.house.gov or (202) 225-3531.

These are great opportunities to let creativity flow and produce tangible results!

All the best,

Jackie

Water Conservation

The City of San Bruno, on their web page, writes:  “This past fall and winter has been one of the driest years on record across the state of California. At the State level, Governor Brown has declared a drought emergency and has asked California residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption by at least 20%.

“At the local level, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has issued a statement today requesting a voluntary 10% reduction on the SF Regional Water System in response to the dry weather conditions and to ensure that available water supplies are prudently managed.

“In coordination with this local advisory, the City of San Bruno is asking residents and businesses to conserve water to help meet the 10% voluntary reduction goal that will help preserve Hetch Hetchy’s and our own groundwater’s valuable resources.

“The SFPUC is closely monitoring water levels in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and snow pack data. Within the next 90 days, the SFPUC will have survey data from snow pack depths and reservoir resource levels throughout the SF Regional Water Supply to share with other water agencies. The data results will allow water agencies to develop their specific water supply strategies for the future. Residents of San Bruno are requested to follow water conservation practices at all times. The City will update residents on any changes made to the request of a 10% voluntary reduction when new information is available.

“Water Conservation Tips and additional information is available on the city’s website at www.sanbrunowater.ca.gov and on Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency’s (BAWSCA) website at http://bawsca.org/ “

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris Issues Guide on Privacy Policies and Do Not Track Disclosures

SAN FRANCISCO – Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today issued a series of recommendations for businesses that directly address recent changes to California privacy law. The guide, Making Your Privacy Practices Public, provides businesses with an up-to-date resource to craft a useful, transparent privacy policy for consumers.

“California has proven that robust and balanced privacy protections are consistent with a thriving innovation economy,” Attorney General Harris said. “This guide is a tool for businesses to create clear and transparent privacy policies that reflect the state’s privacy laws and allow consumers to make informed decisions.”

In 2003, California established the landmark California Online Privacy Protection Act, which was the first law in the nation to require operators of commercial websites, including mobile apps, to conspicuously post a privacy policy if they collect personally identifiable information from Californians. In 2013, the Act was amended by Assembly Bill 370, which requires privacy policies to include information on how the operator responds to Do Not Track signals or similar mechanisms. The law also requires privacy policies to state whether third parties can collect personally identifiable information about the site’s users.

In 2012, Attorney General Harris created the Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit to enforce federal and state privacy laws regulating the collection, retention, disclosure, and destruction of private or sensitive information by individuals, organizations, and the government. The unit also works to educate consumers and recommend best practices to businesses on privacy-related issues.

After receiving requests from the business community regarding privacy policy requirements, Attorney General Harris’ Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit consulted with numerous stakeholders from the business sector, academia and privacy advocates in developing these recommendations.

The guide is available here: http://bit.ly/RUh7Do

Key recommendations from the guide include:

  • Prominently label the section of your policy regarding online tracking, for example: “California Do Not Track Disclosures.”
  • Describe how you respond to a browser’s Do Not Track signal or similar mechanisms within your privacy policy instead of providing a link to another website.
  • If third parties are or may be collecting personally identifiable information, say so in your privacy policy.
  • Explain your uses of personally identifiable information beyond what is necessary for fulfilling a customer transaction or for the basic functionality of the website or app.
  • Describe what personally identifiable information you collect from users, how you use it and how long you retain it.
  • Describe the choices a consumer has regarding the collection, use and sharing of his or her personal information.
  • Use plain, straightforward language that avoids legal jargon and use a format that makes the policy readable, such as a layered format. Use graphics or icons instead of text.

“HP commends the work of California in establishing expectations-based guidance for privacy as it strikes the right balance between innovation and the protection of legitimate consumer rights,” said Scott Taylor, Vice President and Chief Privacy Officer, Hewlett-Packard.

"I applaud the California Attorney General's publication of best practices for communicating with citizens about privacy. Their common-sense recommendations are clear, readable, useful, and mercifully short.  Companies will understand how to comply with the letter and spirit of California transparency laws. In particular, I am delighted to see a light-touch legislative approach for transparency around Do Not Track," said Aleecia McDonald, Director of Privacy, Center for Internet and Society, Stanford Law School.

"Publication of Making Privacy Practices Public is an important step toward helping consumers understand what companies do with the data they collect about them.  Too many privacy policies are incomprehensible legalese.  The best practices spelled out by the California Attorney General if adopted by companies would put privacy policy statements in straightforward, understandable language,” said John Simpson, Director of Privacy Project, Consumer Watchdog.

Attorney General Harris has been a staunch advocate for policies that both protect consumers’ personal information online and foster the continued growth of California’s robust technology economy.

Most recently, Attorney General Harris issued recommendations to California businesses to help protect against and respond to the increasing threat of malware, data breaches and other cyber risks. The guide, Cybersecurity in the Golden State, provides recommendations focused on small to mid-sized businesses, which are particularly vulnerable to cybercrime and often lack the resources to hire cybersecurity personnel. In 2012, 50% of all cyber attacks were aimed at businesses with fewer than 2,500 employees and 31% were aimed at those with less than 250 employees. (http://bit.ly/1p9DGiA)

In 2013, Attorney General Harris issued a guide, Privacy on the Go: Recommendations for the Mobile Ecosystem, which provided app developers with recommendations to develop strong privacy practices, translate those practices into mobile-friendly policies, and coordinate with industry actors to promote transparency. (http://bit.ly/1lZIZAC

In October 2012, Attorney General Harris sent letters to approximately 100 mobile app developers and companies that were not in compliance with the California Online Privacy Protection Act and gave 30 days to post a conspicuous privacy policy. (http://bit.ly/1lZIEOv) In December of that year, the Attorney General filed the first legal action against Delta Airlines, Inc. for its failure to do so. (http://bit.ly/1k2y6Pb)

In February 2012, Attorney General Harris reached an agreement among the seven leading mobile and social app platforms - Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Research in Motion (now Blackberry) - which required that mobile apps provide privacy policies that users could find in a consistent location in the platform store and review before downloading an app. (http://bit.ly/1nkfUiF)
