Caltrain reports:

San Bruno Station Moves to New Location

On April 1, 2014, Caltrain service will shift to the newly completed grade-separated station located at 833 San Mateo Ave. (cross-street San Bruno Avenue). See map atwww.caltrain.com/stations/sanbrunostation.

The Caltrain schedule won't be affected by the move.

A total of 201 parking spaces and a “kiss and ride” lot will serve the station at the site of the former San Bruno Lumber on San Mateo Avenue.

A few finishing touches will be completed after the move, including the elevator located on the east side of the station. We’ll have an official opening later in the spring.

Construction of the San Bruno Grade Separation Project began in 2010. The project elevated the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and
Angus avenues.

Congressional Art Competition:  U. S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier is proud to announce:

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce two opportunities for high school students living in the 14th Congressional District that will challenge them both academically and artistically in unique competitions.

To encourage art education, the Congressional Art Competition gives high school students a chance to gain national recognition for their creative talents. Seventh and 8th graders who share campuses with high schools are also welcome to compete.

All artwork submissions must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2014, at my district office located at 155 Bovet Road, Suite 780, in San Mateo, and must include a completed Student Information & Release Form, signed by the student, his or her parent/guardian, and his or her art teacher. To learn more about the Congressional Art Competition, please visit my website.

I am also proud to announce the first annual Congressional STEM Academic Competition, a.k.a. the “House App Contest.” This new competition is designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Representing Silicon Valley – a hotbed of innovation – has convinced me of the importance of such initiatives that promote investment in STEM education, as well as legislation like H.R. 2426, the Educating Tomorrow’s Engineers Act, of which I am a proud cosponsor. We must prepare our students for employment in the high-tech industry and enhance American competitiveness in the global economy.

The House APP contest is also open to students eligible to enroll in high schools located in the 14th District, and to teams of up to four if at least two students reside in the 14th District. Students must register at StudentAppChallenge.house.gov and create an account at ChallengePost.com by April 30, 2014. Students can visit ChallengePost any time before then to submit their contact information, completed release form, and final app entry. Students can learn more about the competition and find resources for students and teachers on my website. For any additional information, contact Kenneth Dowling at kenneth.dowling@mail.house.gov or (202) 225-3531.

These are great opportunities to let creativity flow and produce tangible results!

All the best,

Jackie

CONTINUING EVENT NEEDING YOUR SUPPORT:

Water Conservation

The City of San Bruno, on their web page, writes:  “This past fall and winter has been one of the driest years on record across the state of California. At the State level, Governor Brown has declared a drought emergency and has asked California residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption by at least 20%.

“At the local level, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has issued a statement today requesting a voluntary 10% reduction on the SF Regional Water System in response to the dry weather conditions and to ensure that available water supplies are prudently managed.

“In coordination with this local advisory, the City of San Bruno is asking residents and businesses to conserve water to help meet the 10% voluntary reduction goal that will help preserve Hetch Hetchy’s and our own groundwater’s valuable resources.

“The SFPUC is closely monitoring water levels in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and snow pack data. Within the next 90 days, the SFPUC will have survey data from snow pack depths and reservoir resource levels throughout the SF Regional Water Supply to share with other water agencies. The data results will allow water agencies to develop their specific water supply strategies for the future. Residents of San Bruno are requested to follow water conservation practices at all times. The City will update residents on any changes made to the request of a 10% voluntary reduction when new information is available.

“Water Conservation Tips and additional information is available on the city’s website at www.sanbrunowater.ca.gov and on Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency’s (BAWSCA) website at http://bawsca.org/ “

When should I call 9-1-1?

The 9-1-1 Rules You Need To Know

Dial 9-1-1 only for an emergency.

 An emergency is:

Any serious medical problem (chest pain, seizure, bleeding)
Any type of fire (business, car, building)

Any life-threatening situation (fights, person with weapons, etc.)
Any crime in progress (whether or not a life is threatened).

 Dial 650-616-7100 for non-emergencies

Dial the San Bruno’s listed seven-digit telephone number (650-616-7100) for non-emergencies.

Non-emergency incidents include "cold" (not in progress) break-ins to vehicles, theft of property or vandalism. You should also use the non-emergency telephone number for intoxicated persons who are not disorderly, cars blocking the street or driveway, or non-injury auto accidents.

If you dialed 9-1-1 in error, DO NOT hang up the telephone

Instead, stay on the phone and explain to the dispatcher that you dialed by mistake and that you do not have an emergency. If you hang up, two police officers must be dispatched to the caller's address. This will needlessly take resources away from genuine emergencies.

When the dispatcher answers, briefly describe the type of incident you are reporting

For example, "I'm reporting an auto fire," or "I'm reporting a shoplifter." Then stay on the line with the dispatcher; do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you. In some cases, the dispatcher will keep you on the line while the emergency units are responding to ask additional questions or to obtain ongoing information.

What information does the Dispatcher need?

CRITICAL INFORMATION THE DISPATCHER NEEDS TO KNOW:

·        WHAT'S THE EMERGENCY? What's wrong?

·        WHERE IS THE EMERGENCY? Give the address; include building number, apartment number, nearest cross street. The name of the building is also helpful.

·        WHO NEEDS HELP? Age / number of people.

Let the call-taker ask you questions

Dispatchers have been trained to ask questions that will prioritize the incident, locate it and dispatch an appropriate response. Your answers should be brief and responsive. Remain calm and speak clearly. If you are not in a position to give full answers to the call-taker (the suspect is nearby), stay on the phone and the dispatcher will ask you questions that can be answered "yes" or "no.

Exciting two weeks for d.tech!

1. February 28th was the deadline for interested students to be eligible to participate in  the lottery for admission to d.tech. We had 161 applicants submit in time!

2. Last week we attended the California Charter School Association's conference in San Jose. We spent a lot of time talking to other charter schools about the lottery process, enrollment and much more. We got tons of great information, made good connections with lots of people, and were very grateful for the free access to our lawyers, of which we took full advantage!!!

3. This week we had our lottery on March 13th. At that event, parents of applicants were able to chat with each other as well as some staff and other d.tech supporters as the lottery took place in the foreground. At the end of the lottery, families found out their student's number and status! We were able to offer admission to 150 students, and 7 students were placed on the wait list. (We are relentlessly optimistic that all 7 of those students will be offered admission in the coming weeks!)

4. In the next two weeks, admitted families are being asked to accept or decline our offer of admission. As this process continues, we will have a better sense of our actual numbers.

Still accepting applications!
In the meantime, d.tech is still accepting applications. Please encourage others to apply for this founding 9th grade class. Monday, March 17th is the next deadline for additional applicants. We will be holding our 2nd lottery on Thursday, March 20 to determine placement on the waiting list for those who have applied since the end of February. We will continue to have new deadlines and lotteries periodically over the coming months in order to ensure a full class.

Location
As most of you know we have been engaged in discussions regarding two different locations: a separate wing at Mills High School and College of San Mateo.  The wing at Mills High School was offered to us by the district, and we were pursuing a space at College of San Mateo based on the assumption that Nueva High School was going to move out over the summer.  In a decision that surprised everyone, Nueva has exercised their lease option for another year in the facility meaning that the location is no longer an option for us.

As many applicant families noted in their survey response there are distinct advantages associated with being at Mills, perhaps most important is that we could most likely remain at Mills for more than one year, giving our families stability and freeing up time and energy to search for the ideal permanent location.

We do know that some people favored CSM, particularly in terms of the commute.  We have looked into how independent schools handle similar issues and will be sharing ideas with the applicant families. This is one of our first design challenges, but we are relentlessly optimistic that we'll be able to create a feasible solution, whether it's helping coordinate carpools or some other solution involving Caltrain,  shuttles, or something else.

Virtual "high-five" for making it to the end!
Thanks again for all the support!
