DIVAS® HALF MARATHON & 5K SERIES RETURNS TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY FOR THE THIRD YEAR

Series expected to set record high registration numbers and bring thousands to Bay Area on race weekend

MIAMI, FL- The Divas® Half Marathon & 5K Series is excited to return to the San Francisco Bay Area for a third year on June 1, 2014.The event, known for boas, tiaras, bubbly and sparkling finisher medals, is expected to break its previous registration record and bring an estimated 6,500 runners and 1,000 spectators to the Bay Area on race weekend.

 

“The registration numbers for this third running of the Divas® Half Marathon & 5K Event in San Francisco Bay, California are amazing!” says Continental Event and Sports Management National Race Director, Gaby Pozo. “Thanks to the hard work of the San Mateo Convention & Visitors Bureau and the cities of San Mateo, Burlingame and Foster City, this event will be spectacular and from the looks of it, the largest in its brief 3-year history. The rise in participation shows that the course is absolutely breathtaking and one worth experiencing again and again as many participants will be back for the second or third time.”

 

This year, Auburn, California resident, Jamie Quadra, will be joining in on the Divas® fun. Jamie was paralyzed by a stroke and completely lost the ability to walk eight years ago. “I started running to celebrate the 5th anniversary of my stroke survival” said Jamie. “I run because a doctor told me that I would never run again.” When asked why she chose the Divas® event, she replied, “I chose the Divas® Half Marathon so that I could get dressed up with my runner girls and have a great time out on the course. Pace is not important to me. For me, one percent, 100 times can get me to 100 percent, no matter what the odds. My hair grew back after they shaved it for surgery, all paralysis has been overcome except in my left hand, and I can't wait to be a Diva!”

 

The half marathon will begin on Sunday June 1, 2014 at 7:00 AM with the 5K following at 7:15 AM. Both races will start and finish at Bayside Park in Burlingame, California. The event will be preceded by a two day Health and Fitness Boutique at the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront.

“Bridging Communities”

WHO:      The San Mateo County PRIDE Initiative is led by San Mateo County Health System’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Office of Diversity and Equity, and its major sponsors, including North County Prevention Partnership, Our Family Coalition, Peninsula Metropolitan Community Church, Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) San Jose/Peninsula, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties and StarVista.

WHAT:    The PRIDE Initiative invites everyone to the 2nd annual San Mateo County Pride Celebration. Attendees will enjoy a fun-filled day of live music, entertainment and informational programs on topics including youth advocacy in schools, coming out, and expressions of spirituality and support groups tailored to the LGBTQQI2S (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and 2 spirit) community.

FUTURE EVENT: - Centennial Tree Project – Free Street Trees

The City of San Bruno, as part of the year-long Centennial celebration, is trying to plant 100 new Street Trees with the help of residents.  The trees will be provided to you free and maintained by the City of San Bruno.  You will be notified of the date of planting.  You will be given a Centennial Certificate stating your participation in the project and which number of the 100 trees is yours.  Limit one tree per house and tree location must not interfere with underground utilities.

Representing Silicon Valley – a hotbed of innovation – has convinced me of the importance of such initiatives that promote investment in STEM education, as well as legislation like H.R. 2426, the Educating Tomorrow’s Engineers Act, of which I am a proud cosponsor. We must prepare our students for employment in the high-tech industry and enhance American competitiveness in the global economy.

Division 1 – Sports – All sports teams – please limit to 3 walking adults

Division 2 – Carriages – Doll or baby carriages pushed by one contestant only

Division 3 – Small Floats or Wagon/Carts – pushed or pulled by the contenstant(s) – float size not to exceed 3 feet by 5 feet

Division 4 – Animals – All live pets: dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, fish, etc.  Pulled on cart or walking

Division 5 – Bikes – All bicycles, tricycles, scooters or any peddle driven entry – Must be decorated with flowers.

Division 6 – Walkers – Individual entries only in costume, unique or different.  Walking entries only

Division 7 – Family & Neighborhood Groups – This division is for unique and different ideas.  For groups entering a float larger than 3 feet by 5 feet, float must be pulled by adults.

Division 8 – Children’s Organizations.  All entries by schools, groups, and clubs.  May be pulled by adults.

Division 9 – Adult Organizations – Business Group or Adult Clubs with participants 14 years of age or under.  May be pulled by adults.

Parade Rules

1.      All Children 14 years of age and under may participate in the parade

2.     Parade entries are not limited to San Bruno residents.  All children are welcome to participate.  No sign-ups are necessary; just show up.

3.     Flowers (real or artificial) must dominate the decoration of each entry.  Entries without floral decoration will not be considered for awards.

4.     Automobile or other motorized vehicles including battery-operated cars will not be allowed in the parade.

5.     The parade will form on the streets adjacent to KAIN AVENUE.  All entries must be in line by 12:30 TO BE CONSIDERED FOR JUDGING.

Judging

Originality, Use of Theme, Workmanship, Amount and Size of Flowers

Prizes for the winning entries will be awarded at San Bruno City Park following the parade.  There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies in each division.  50 Honorable Mention trophies will also be awarded.  A Special and Junior Sweepstakes Trophy will be presented to the top two float entries.

Water Conservation

The City of San Bruno, on their web page, writes:  “This past fall and winter has been one of the driest years on record across the state of California. At the State level, Governor Brown has declared a drought emergency and has asked California residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption by at least 20%. 

“At the local level, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has issued a statement today requesting a voluntary 10% reduction on the SF Regional Water System in response to the dry weather conditions and to ensure that available water supplies are prudently managed.

“In coordination with this local advisory, the City of San Bruno is asking residents and businesses to conserve water to help meet the 10% voluntary reduction goal that will help preserve Hetch Hetchy’s and our own groundwater’s valuable resources.

“The SFPUC is closely monitoring water levels in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and snow pack data. Within the next 90 days, the SFPUC will have survey data from snow pack depths and reservoir resource levels throughout the SF Regional Water Supply to share with other water agencies. The data results will allow water agencies to develop their specific water supply strategies for the future. Residents of San Bruno are requested to follow water conservation practices at all times. The City will update residents on any changes made to the request of a 10% voluntary reduction when new information is available.

The City of San Bruno Personal Tribute Program provides a way for people to honor or remember a loved one in the San Bruno community. These enduring and tax-deductible gifts serve both as a personal commemoration and as a way to enhance the community’s enjoyment of City parks.

Personal Tribute Plaques

In tribute and remembrance, a loved one may be honored with a 3”x 3”commemorative bronze plaque on the San Bruno Recognition Sculpture in City Park. Plaques are inscribed with the honoree’s first and last name, the date of the recognition and with either “In Honor of” or “In Memory of.” The Personal Tribute commemorative bronze plaque donation is $400. Plaques may be ordered using the link to the form below.

Park Amenity Tributes

Personal tributes may also be given through a donation for a specific park amenity (tree, bench, water fountain, picnic table, etc.) Staff from the Community Services Department is available to assist donors in the selection of a park amenity. Please fill out the form at the link below and check the box indicating your wish to donate an amenity and staff will contact you to discuss the Department's current needs. The donation fee associated with the park amenity varies.

The San Bruno Council meeting May 13th 2014 resulted in the following:

1.     San Bruno residents have only conserved 2% and businesses 5% on their water consumption when the City requested a 10% reduction.  The state has indicated that if voluntary conservation does not reach 10%, Governor Brown may institute a MANDATORY 20% reduction.

2.     Proclaimed week of May 11-17th as National Police Week.  100 new fallen police officer’s names will be added to the plaque in Washington D.C. with 8 of these to be California police officers.

3.     Shelter Creek Condominiums was recognized for their efforts by the Bay Area Climate Collaborative Electric Vehicle Readiness Award for the Most Development in Northern California.  “Ready – Set – Charge”

4.     San Bruno City Clerk Carol Bonner received the 2014 League of California Cities City Clerk’s Department Humanitarian Award of Distinction.

5.     The Chestnut Sewer Rehabilitation Project is complete; came in on time; and UNDER BUDGET.

6.     Proclaimed week of Nay 18-24th as Public Works Week.  “Building for Today – Planning for Tomorrow”.  Public Work’s Open House – Wednesday May 21st – Corporation Yard 225 Huntington Ave 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Come see our displays and demonstrations of how we maintain our City Streets, Wastewater, and Water Systems.  Hot dogs and refreshments will be served for lunch.

7.     The Recology rate increases were approved.

8.     The City has planted the first 14 new street trees and has requests for an additional 10.  The City hopes to plant 100 new street trees as part of the City’s Centennial Celebration.

9.     Councilmember O’Connell reported that Operation Clean Sweep collected 3,800 pounds of “stuff” and 1,300 pounds of recyclables.  The free lunch used recyclable items and thus added only 5 pounds of “GREY” container garbage.  All the rest of the collected items were recyclable.

Caltrain Seeks Volunteers for its Community Advisory Committee

The Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, the entity that manages Caltrain, is seeking volunteers from San Francisco and San Mateo counties to apply for its Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC).

The CAC is composed of nine community members who serve in an advisory capacity to the Caltrain board of directors, providing input on the needs of current and potential rail customers. Applicants for the CAC should represent the demographics of Caltrain’s ridership.

The CAC meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 5:40 p.m. at the Caltrain headquarters at 1250 San Carlos Avenue, about one block from the San Carlos Caltrain Station. All meetings are open to the public.

Residents interested in joining the advisory body can find an application on the CAC website HERE or by calling 650.508.6223. Applications for the CAC are due by June 1.
