The day is almost here! -- 24 Hours beginning at Midnight
on Tuesday, May 6, 2014

San Mateo Police Activities League is a non-profit partnership between the San Mateo Police and Park & Rec Departments, along with a committed Board. PAL is dedicated to building the bond between cops and kids, and ensuring our youth grow up safe, strong, and armed with critical life and social skills.

The goal we have set for San Mateo PAL is to raise $10,000. Please help us reach this number! Some matching fund opportunities are available to increase our revenue even further. Donations received on May 6 will allow us to increase the number of kids we serve at PAL and expand our programs to include many other activities, workshops and trips.

It’s very easy to give, simply click on the link shown here anytime on May 6. Once you’ve clicked on the link you’ll have reached the “PAL” page, then just follow the directions to donate using your credit card. Here’s the link:

FUTURE EVENT: - U. S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier is proud to announce:

I am also proud to announce the first annual Congressional STEM Academic Competition, a.k.a. the “House App Contest.” This new competition is designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Representing Silicon Valley – a hotbed of innovation – has convinced me of the importance of such initiatives that promote investment in STEM education, as well as legislation like H.R. 2426, the Educating Tomorrow’s Engineers Act, of which I am a proud cosponsor. We must prepare our students for employment in the high-tech industry and enhance American competitiveness in the global economy.

The House APP contest is also open to students eligible to enroll in high schools located in the 14th District, and to teams of up to four if at least two students reside in the 14th District. Students must register at StudentAppChallenge.house.gov and create an account at ChallengePost.com by April 30, 2014. Students can visit ChallengePost any time before then to submit their contact information, completed release form, and final app entry. Students can learn more about the competition and find resources for students and teachers on my website. For any additional information, contact Kenneth Dowling at kenneth.dowling@mail.house.gov or (202) 225-3531.

These are great opportunities to let creativity flow and produce tangible results!

All the best,

Jackie

Water Conservation

The City of San Bruno, on their web page, writes:  “This past fall and winter has been one of the driest years on record across the state of California. At the State level, Governor Brown has declared a drought emergency and has asked California residents and businesses to reduce their water consumption by at least 20%.

“At the local level, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has issued a statement today requesting a voluntary 10% reduction on the SF Regional Water System in response to the dry weather conditions and to ensure that available water supplies are prudently managed.

“In coordination with this local advisory, the City of San Bruno is asking residents and businesses to conserve water to help meet the 10% voluntary reduction goal that will help preserve Hetch Hetchy’s and our own groundwater’s valuable resources.

“The SFPUC is closely monitoring water levels in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and snow pack data. Within the next 90 days, the SFPUC will have survey data from snow pack depths and reservoir resource levels throughout the SF Regional Water Supply to share with other water agencies. The data results will allow water agencies to develop their specific water supply strategies for the future. Residents of San Bruno are requested to follow water conservation practices at all times. The City will update residents on any changes made to the request of a 10% voluntary reduction when new information is available.

“Water Conservation Tips and additional information is available on the city’s website at www.sanbrunowater.ca.gov and on Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency’s (BAWSCA) website at http://bawsca.org/ “

Dear Friends,

I am excited to share with you two updates about two Congressional Competitions for high school students. We announced the winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition at a reception in my District Office on Wednesday, April 23. Jessica Qui, a student at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, won the first prize for her drawing “Gestalt.”

Attached photo shows Congresswoman Jackie Speier (l) and winner.  Jessica Qui with her art teacher Phyllis Ciment and Congresswoman Speier.

The Art Competition is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain national recognition for their creative talents. So if you are a high school student living in my district, I urge you to participate next year. You can find more information on my website.

Secondly, the competitors in the first annual Congressional STEM Academics Competition have more time to create an app. We extended the deadline from April 30 to May 31. I hope you will take advantage of that and enter the contest!

The House App Contest is designed to engage high school students’ creativity and encourage participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. Representing Silicon Valley – a hotbed of innovation – has convinced me of the importance of such initiatives that promote investment in STEM education, as well as legislation like H.R. 2426, the Educating Tomorrow’s Engineers Act, of which I am a proud cosponsor. I want to do my part to prepare you for employment in the high-tech industry.

If you are a student eligible to enroll in high schools located in the 14th District, you can enter by yourself or with a team of up to four if at least two of you live in the 14th District. You need to register at StudentAppChallenge.house.gov and create an account at ChallengePost.com by noon on Saturday, May 31, 2014. You can visit ChallengePost any time before then to submit your contact information, completed release form, and final app entry. You can learn more about the competition and find resources for students and teachers on my website. For any additional information, contact Kenneth Dowling at kenneth.dowling@mail.house.gov or (202) 225-3531.

All the best,

/s/ Jackie
