Well, it looks like that's going to change rather quickly now. Anyone seen the price per gallon thisRead More past week? Where is the outrage ? Oh yes, Obama's in the White House, not George Bush. You "progressives" are a bunch of hypocrites.

Who has even heard of these stores? Didn't Aaron Bros.go under in 1987? Who wants to take the timeRead More to hack into these accounts? Dummies that shop there don't have any money! Low-brow and low income customers who bring in their 5 screaming kids ( 4 are obese!) And their parents let them terrorize the rest of the shoppers. Free babysitting while Mommy orders an extra large Slushee for Remo and his ADD. Why ? Parents weren't parented either. Or its considered cute as Jr. has his meltdown with sticky chocolate fingers ! Count me out...

Security is a deterrent not a preventative measure. There is no way to be secure from everyRead More possibility because it is impossible to even conceive of every possibility. Instead we try to secure against the threats we know of through experience and those we may anticipate through inference extrapolated from those experiences. The businesses are naturally and rightly profit driven and things that do not directly and or immediately hurt the bottom line do not get priority funding. Thieves too are profit driven though they are less regulated than business and in general face more personal risk than businesses typically do toward realizing their bottom line. Due to the actual few distinctions between the thief and business the thief must be the more resourceful of the two and thus more innovative. Security is always going to be a reactionary means of preventing theft. The proactive means to prevent theft are to accept there is no absolute security and otherwise either too expensive, too harsh, too time consuming or some combination of those. Considering how long humanity seems to have dealt with the issue, one might think we would have tried all of the available variables and figured it out sometime during the last 5000 years through trial and error. Oh wait, we have. Communities where the moral code is instilled in the population from cradle to grave coupled with punishment, justly applied, for infractions have almost zero crime and it costs them almost zero dollars. Face it folks, we're all hippy freaks living in/on a commune we call Earth. Continually spending good money over top of bad as our orthodox approach has required over the centuries has only produced more crime and or prisons. This implies more crime/prisons is the goal if you THINK.

When taxes are imposed on various industries then to stay in business the prices increase on theRead More consumer! Obamacare , gas taxes, payroll taxes, tolls, the proposed soda and candy tax , your tobacco tax is 75% of what the product really costs! Commercial Property tax increases! Do you people see what's going on here? This country is being destroyed by the Democrats! It is starting to resemble The a Soviet Union! We should change the name of this country to the USSA!

And all this time i thought it was Pork Barrel spending.

Mark, Your words are absolutely disgusting. Please do not use this comment thread as a vehicle toRead More spew your racist mentality. And for your information, food-borne illnesses come from agriculture, period. All around the world, including in the U.S. Lastly, your hatred for people of colour does not mean that you understand disease, at all. Good luck in life.

I guess all of those alternative energy sources are so much hooey. Also the claim that the US willRead More be energy sufficient in a few decades is beginning to look a little suspect.
Sam Chetcuti March 30, 2014 at 08:12 pm
I can't relate this article to others I have been reading. The other articles I am talking about areRead More saying how the US is becoming less energy dependent on foreign oil. If that is the case and the US is extracting so much energy from it's own territory, why then the spike in gas prices?

Because you will continue to pay for it

"PG&E officials said they believe criminal charges are not warranted and that employees didRead More not intentionally violate the pipeline safety law." It does not matter if you intensionally violated it or not. PG&E failed at doing their jobs, breaking the law in the process, and people lost their lives. Money does not matter, $500 million to the families... drop in the bucket to them. They say they used shareholder money, so next year they raise rates to recover from low shareholder earnings. We are the ones paying for this.

The Operator was reprimanded for crimes the operator DID NOT commit. This was all a set up by CALRead More Recycle to shut this operation down in order to permit success for Shamrock Recycling by Michaer Burnes who's wife works for the CAL Recycle department. All San Mateo County inspectors noted zero violations on every single inspection. However, the state inspectors would show up on DAILY basis and never submit an inspection report in person. Instead they would leave, make falsefied reports in their office and then mail out a violations. Unlike the Fire Department or any other agency that hands you a copy of your inspection report at the time of inspection this agency never once handed you a report. They left and weeks later send you a violation. Inspectors even lied on the stand. This was all a set up by a corrupt department. This department is more corrupt then our senate. Anyone is writing about this story should look up what role Joanne BUrnes plays in the department and her relationship to her husband Michael Burnes Owner and Operator of ShamRock Recycling and other tire recycling facilites. The case was represented by the Law Office of Willie Brown and the ex Mayor himseld stated that unfortunatley we live in a corrupt state and will lose this case as long as its handled by internal legal counsel which it was. He also stated that once we appeal the decision to a real court - this would be dismissed because there was no evidence to any of the violation. All of the violations were actually dropped except for one day of over load of tires. Despite the fact that at the end the operator was fined for only one violation the state still took away the permit to operate. Because as long as Global Waste Management has a permit - Shamrock Recycling and Michael Burnes and Joanna Burnes other facilities cannot succeed. The operator ran out funds after this trial and was unable to apeal to a REAL Court per Willie Browns recommendations. It is a shame that hard working citizens fall deep under in this state because everyone in CA is corrupt!!!
Following months of "Fight for $15" protests calling on higher wages for fast-food workers, some California McDonald's employees have joined in six lawsuits filed in three states.

This article is such a disappointment. What happened to our local news on Patch?
Chris Corbett March 14, 2014 at 04:41 am
I think it is highly relevant as McD's and other fast food establishments are in South City and onRead More the Peninsula, as well as employ so many herein...just shows how these big corps. do take advantage of the little guy to get ahead. However, in the end, the little guy still needs to wake up and take control of his and her own destiny and quit pointing fingers and become better educated and more marketable--then indisposable to a company!
A Delargo March 8, 2014 at 05:03 pm
Just like Carmen's comment above.... most people are professional and the rest are not looking forRead More a job and therefor don't count as 'unemployed'. People are either working their butt off or trying to get an Obama phone !
Ralph Garcia March 9, 2014 at 10:32 am
I have read some really off the wall comments here but to think a DA has anything to do with theRead More unemployment rate is just stupid
Yvonne M March 9, 2014 at 11:16 am
There's a lot of professional people I know who are unemployed and their unemployment has expiredRead More and therefore no longer counted as unemployed.

the good news is that a reputable company bought Safeway; the bad news is they may keep the sameRead More awful management personnel therefore stifling its rebuilding.
Steve Pogue March 8, 2014 at 06:08 pm
Interesting that the price paid for long-established Safeway with 1,305 stores in 20 states is lessRead More than half of what Facebook paid for Whats App. Seems a little out of balance, no?
Gladwyn d'Souza March 10, 2014 at 08:47 am
Only if there is an earthquake or other natural disaster and folks are dependent on the three dayRead More supply at Safeway. Hopefully Albertson closes all these dumps. Remember Safeway's response to selling pink slime- all our products are approved by the USDA.

Kudos to CVS, I smoked for half a century and quit three years ago, I am one of the lucky ones.
Phillip Bailey February 7, 2014 at 01:46 pm
Mike (above said) How about letting us make our own choices? PC is alive and well at CVS. By theRead More way, what a dumb name for a drug store. I miss Long's. Gee Mike C.V.S. is the acronym and once stood for Consumer Value Store. It now stands for 'Convenience-Value and Service. I personally think CVS should be applauded for this. Smokers just don't SMOKE ... they walk into establishments and sit down near non smokers and the smokers often REEK of cigarette smoke and REEK is an understatement.
Bob Rosenthal February 8, 2014 at 12:20 pm
I'm elated to see the stance CVS has taken. I quit smoking 12 years ago after 60 years of smoking. IRead More could feel a difference almost immediately. I had triple bypass surgery three years ago as a result of smoking. If people want to smoke their brains out I have no problem. Freedom of choice. However, I feel that CVS should also discontinue the sale of all alcoholic beverages. Same goes for Walgreens. How can a drug store sell cigs and alcohol and the sell drugs to combat the effects of same? How can the citizenry allow this to happen and on the other hand vote to ban the sale of guns? Makes no sense to me.
