I love dogs, but my circumstances don't allow me to have one. In any case, unless someone loves dogsRead More they shouldn't have one -- simply needing a burglar alarm is not nearly a good enough reason have a dog, and some dogs wouldn't make a good burglar alarm anyway.

How was the homeowner supposed to know if these kids were armed or not? It was probably dark. MostRead More likely, the teens had heard around the neighborhood that this guy was an easy mark and decided to subject him to further victimization. In any case, just like the Trayvon incident, we were not there and do not know the full story. He had every right to defend himself and his property.

I guess. The Patch has been pretty poor since they got rid of their local editors.

Cops got a chance to play with their toys. Relax people. It's not like you had to respondRead More personally. Stop saying it's a waste of money. Then money is absolutely minimal. These guys were not called away from their golf games. I would also like to compliment the responders for not accidentally killing someone. It showed professionalism and did not add to the "trend" of killing "innocent" people; which is becoming an issues to watch. The people incensed over this should focus their anger on plastic shopping bags as many others are doing over at another great Patch piece. Evil lurks at the checkout counters across America!

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Seamus Carty April 23, 2014 at 03:47 pm
"The goal of Affirmative was to right an over two hundred years wrong." My family did notRead More get to the US until 1948. Are we part of the two hundred years of wrong? Why should my orthopedic surgeon's kid get preferential treatment over my nephew (son of a plumber) based on the relative complexions?
Porter gladstone April 23, 2014 at 05:25 pm
Hmm--it's all about academics. That's awesome. I wonder why kids play lacrosse or volunteer atRead More church, or play an instrument. After all, you shoulndt take into account one factor other than test scores. Cool. I just happen to think that not many of you believe that's the way it works.
Porter gladstone April 23, 2014 at 07:39 pm
liu wei. Not sure what you mean ""not quit the same." (genius). Really? Oh IRead More thought that lacrosse and affirmative action are the same thing. I only expect people with 90 and above i.q. to understand that test scores are not the only determinants. College admission committees take into account a whole multitude of factors. People on this thread are asking for scholastic considerations only. Playing lacrosse is one factor. Being the captain another. Being the captain of a country championship team another. Being the captain of a state championship team and making all american another. growing up with a single parent --another. Growing up in a ghetto and having the character and drive to defy peer groups in order to seek out a better life another. Sure lacrosse is different than being a minority. So are the experiences that students have in more challenged environments. College admissions officers gauge the probability of success of a student, but also what diversity they may bring in order to broaden the worlds of other students. Where did you go to school Liu? Maybe you went to a school that offered online courses? Because the school that I went to considered the conversations you have in dorm rooms as much an education as going to Econ 101.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Susan Harris April 23, 2014 at 07:12 pm
Tamara, what social studies standards are you talking about? The Common Core only covers standardsRead More in literacy and math. There are no CC standards for science or history. Are you talking about state standards?
Tamara April 23, 2014 at 08:35 pm
Common Core has science and social studies standards - they were written after math and ELA - theyRead More have not been implemented yet. They are more controversial so math and ELA was put thru first to pave the way.
Tamara April 23, 2014 at 09:18 pm

Netflix is hands down the best deal going, and it has been a bargain for YEARS. I guess theRead More nonsensical whiners who complain about a long-delayed, $2 a MONTH increase are worried it will cost them a (partial) SINGLE LATTE. Utterly ridiculous.

TO MICHAEL BRENNICK: Leftist, Democra... WHAT? You think Comcast is part of the so-calledRead More "liberal" media (which, by the way, doesn't even exist)? Are you freakin' KIDDIN' me? FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup! Capitalism is defined as an economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means ofRead More production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations for private profit... in contrast to Socialism (co-operatives) or Communism (state ownership) - whereby people work or act together for a collective or social benefit. Hence PG&E is saying we are acting to benefit our private or corporate stockholders! We didn't do anything wrong - according to the definition of capitalism! In essence, under capitalism, PROFITS are Privatized, and LOSSES are Socialized!

These companies think little of life; money is their bottom line. It is like BP, they are willing toRead More take risks with the safety of others, (and the environment) because they figure the money they save will be huge, and public memory is short! Those who die are merely collateral damage. Then they make ads that say how much they "really care!" They should save that BS ad money and use it for making improvements on their pipelines and rigs! Stick it to these oil a-holes, and go green!

I don't believe this kid is competent enough to make those decisions. Those kids need to beRead More prosecuted to the fullest and if the does judge does not agree he needs to step down.
Pat Mcloughlin April 23, 2014 at 10:27 am
Sorry, Autistic boy, but there are a multitude of crimes here. These so called 'friends' abused youRead More terribly ~ called 'bullying', & that alone cannot be tolerated. Then, there is animal cruelty involved, another terrible crime, plus, harassment of all kinds, leudness, & who knows what else. These 'friends' need to be charged & made aware of the seriousness of their deeds, punished accordingly & helped through proper mental councelling.
nonoise April 23, 2014 at 02:49 pm
It is probly the parents that want to drop the charges, not the boy. They shouldn't. I don'tRead More know why they would want to drop the charges.

Let us start getting rid of these eyesore buildings and bring popular businesses to San Bruno soRead More residents don't have to do business in other cities.
A Delargo April 21, 2014 at 09:08 am
Is this city property ? Discounted aquaponics for people that 'actually need the assistance'.Read More Then any extra cash will be used for parades and festivals. This is another example of liberals gone wild. Rent the property to whomever is willing to run their own business. This smells like a city feeding frenzy that will need lots of 'city' managers to supervise everything - funneling any surplus to the favored cause du jour. Please, city officials, clean the streets, stop this runaway crime, and lower my garbage fees - aquaponics is not in your job description, that's not why you were elected. Can you say boondoggle? Just saying.

I want to see some rubber ducky racing down the stepped fountain! It would be such fun to see theRead More ducks bouncing down from step to step like slinkies. It's such a beautiful view from atop the new station when you look into the distance -- too bad when you look down it is marred by some really ugly spaces like the abandoned bank building and former tire center. Just hope that when the economy picks up no one builds high rises that will block the view. I also hope that people walking to/from the train station help business pick up on San Mateo Avenue. I find it really depressing how dead the street is when I walk to/from the station.
