A San Bruno elementary school teacher says there is a solution to all of the negative news coming out about the San Bruno Park School District: positive stories about all the wonderful things students are doing in the classroom.
Editor's Note: The following letter was sent out to the San Bruno schools community today. It has been re-published here with permission from the author. Today, amidst the many dark clouds that have been forming over our community, I am asking that each of you take a step back, breathe and begin to share ALL the GOOD that is happening too! There has been so much negativity surrounding all of us that I'm hoping that we can balance it with POSITIVITY that will uplift us all. So many amazing things happen in the San Bruno Park School District everyday because of all of you, and I hate to see it overshadowed! So, what am I asking of you? Please share your stories of all the wonderful things that are happening with the children in your …

The new committee is being formed to attempt to address income and budget issues in the San Bruno Park School District.
By now, most of us are aware of the continuing budget issues that the San Bruno Park School district is facing. After dealing with the long running DDAC committee and then the possibility of closing two schools and even sharing principals, most of us are painfully aware by now of the upcoming budget shortfall that the district will (and continue) to face in the next several months. During the meeting of the San Bruno Park Board of Trustees on April 17, a Save Our Schools committee was created to take a look at ways to help the district increase revenue. The original intent of this committee was to work with the district to identify and execute of funding opportunities to support education. It was to consist of community members with some …

A resident says the city needs to do something about San Bruno Avenue West and Glenview Avenue, which has become a dangerous intersection for both drivers and pedestrians. Do you agree?
Editor's Note: A resident recently sent the following letter in an email to the city, asking the mayor and the Traffic Safety and Parking Committee to look into installing stop signs at this intersection. The city responded that the resident's recommendation was not a feasible solution because of the intersection's proximity to Skyline Boulevard. The resident's letter has been re-published here with her permission. How possible is it to make Glenview Avenue and San Bruno Avenue a four-way stop? For us residents who drive this intersection a few times a day, it has become very dangerous. It does not help that there is a walking trail nearby and that there is all the construction that's happening in our area. We also have a gas station there…

The Peninsula Humane Society's Scott Delucchi showcased oxygen masks that allow firefighters to treat animals suffering from smoke inhalation on "The Sharon Osbourne Show" in a 2004 appearance.
I’ll always feel a little indebted to actor Wilmer Valderrama ("That 70s Show"). Thanks to Wilmer’s no-show, I was a guest on "The Sharon Osbourne Show." Let me correct that. My dog Cooper and I were guests on the talk show which aired in 2003-2004. Here's the set-up: In the winter of 2004, I received a call from someone claiming to be a producer from the show. This was at the time when my organization, the Peninsula Humane Society, was in the news for outfitting all our local fire departments with special oxygen masks that would allow firefighters to treat animals suffering from smoke inhalation. Naturally, I figured this was a friend pulling a fast one on me and almost hung up. He kept at it, I realized he was who he said he was and we…

Just when I thought we would be all done with treatments for Cole's cancer, the doctors said he would have to go through more therapy. That sucks.
Editor's Note: This blog post originally ran on April 24. I don’t usually put titles on my posts. The reason for this is twofold. First, titling requires a level of cleverity that I do not possess in sufficient amount. B, I never know what I am going to write about until it comes out. And since I don’t go back and re-read, it does not make sense to put in a title. And 3, I like to see what Martin at San Bruno Patch (shameless pitch…check out Patch.com) comes up with (it makes me feel like a real author). Today however, I am making an exception. I was thinking about calling today’s post Ruin v Peservation but I think that only a couple of people (Matt, Patrick, maybe Jason) would understand what I am talking about, so I went with the …

Odwalla is offering a prize to the most innovative tree project in the country. Two of the finalists are from California, and they need your support.
I figure that all you guys are online anyway, and like trees, or you wouldn't be reading this article. The news is that beverage company Odwalla is offering $10,000 to 10 projects around the country with the most votes between now and June 1. Two-minute videos made by each of the top 20 can be seen here. You have to be at least 18 to vote, and you only get to cast one vote. Period. There are two that I feel pretty strongly about. One candidate is California ReLeaf, which has a Healthy Trees Healthy Kids program that wants to plant 114 trees on the Brentwood Elementary School Campus in East Palo Alto. The other candidate I like a lot is Just One Tree, which wants to plant 12,000 lemon trees to make San Francisco completely self-…

Wild week at PHS ends with pomp and circumstance.
I’m used to getting upstaged by animals. When I speak at local service club meetings, the audience wants to know all about my dog, my wing man. "What breed is he?" I often hear. " How old is he?... Where did you get him?... Is he available for adoption?" Still, this week was a joke. I felt like the Invisible Man. And I could not have been any happier. In a two-day stretch, I was upstaged by 25 animals - none of them my own. On Wednesday, I issued a news release to my media contacts. The headline read, “Peninsula Humane Society’s New Wildlife Center Caring for First Groups of Orphaned Baby,” and the release included photos of the 10 ducklings and 10 goslings now growing up inside our Center for Compassion. These fuzzy, week-old babies …
I couldn't done my tree planting project without the help of the San Bruno 4-H Club. So here's a project of theirs I'd like you to support.
4-H in San Bruno was so supportive of my Reforesting San Bruno project, that I want to do a little promotion for some help they need with the farm. And all it will take is for you to eat spaghetti. Not too hard, right? Especially if the meatballs are excellent. When they describe their challenge, they put it like this: "The San Bruno 4-H farm was built in 1969 (43 years ago!) and although it has been well maintained, the years have taken their toll and the farm now needs major work including a new roof and structural repairs. With the generous assistance of the San Bruno Lions Club, we hope to raise enough money so that the work can begin later in 2012. With their help, we are holding a fundraising Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, May 11, …

A San Bruno parent encourages residents to stand up against the San Bruno Park School District's proposal to close two schools.
Dear San Bruno Families, As many of you are aware, the San Bruno Park School District Board will be meeting tonight, to decide on whether or not to close schools in San Bruno. The agenda posted on the district website specifically calls out El Crystal and Crestmoor. Up to this point the discussion about school closure has pushed our schools apart, but this decision is going to affect ALL OF US! I am inviting all San Bruno families to JOIN TOGETHER, step up and speak out at the meeting tomorrow night in support of ALL schools in San Bruno. We need to pull together. Together we are stronger. We can make a difference for all our children! A More Creative Solution? We have to make cuts to address the budget shortfall, yes. But are these the …
The Reforesting San Bruno project that took place on Earth Day was a huge success. Thanks to a group effort, the Crestmoor neighborhood is now a little bit greener.
Well, it was even better than I thought it could ever be. At final count, we planted 52 trees. Thank goodness so many great people showed up to plant trees! Adults who were counting said that we had about 250 people involved in planting the trees. It started at 8:30 when my Mom and I arrived, and Kevin from the city was there to help us get our big ornamental trees out from the gated canyon area. We had to tag them fast with the resident's addresses, because a friend of a Pacifica 4-H family who owned a truck was coming to help deliver them to people's homes (these things were huge, and heavy!) Another team was at the San Bruno 4-H Farm picking up the 40 fruit trees that they had been taking care of for me. The whole city parks and …

All school sites are doing wounderful things to help the students and parents. The adult things that are happening, now, are related to the SBPSD Board and the community, they are suppose to serve. So adminstrators, teachers and staff keep up the good work. Chuck Zelnik   more ›
