Hundreds of police, family and friends attended services for Deputy Heikoti “Koti” Fakava, a 46-year-old officer with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department who passed away on May 1 after a brief illness. Traditional Tongan mats called taʻovala were worn by many mourners. White flowers, leis and a large picture of Deputy Fakava were also on display. Police motorcycles led the long procession of vehicles as they left the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Millbrae, headed for Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma.

Marc Anthony Nichols is accused of molesting a 7-year-old girl when he was living with a family in San Bruno. He was convicted of child molestation in the first trial.
A 44-year-old man who was convicted in 2011 of molesting a girl when he was living with a family in San Bruno will get a new trial, a judge ruled Monday. In October, a jury found Marc Anthony Nichols guilty of committing a lewd act with a child and committing oral copulation with a child. The charges stemmed from a 2008 incident in which Nichols allegedly molested a 7-year-old girl while he was renting a room from a woman in San Bruno. Nichols was facing up to 25 years to life in prison. But in a court hearing Monday, Superior Court Judge Clifford Cretan granted Nichols a new trial after determining that one of the jurors during the first trial failed to disclose her own experience with abuse as a child. Two men are accused of killing 23-year-old Christopher Chastain after an argument went awry on a late night in 2011.
The trial for the two men accused of killing a 23-year-old San Bruno man last year on Cypress Avenue has been reset for the fall, a San Mateo County superior court judge said Monday. Nicholas Vargas, 25, of San Bruno and Brandon Thompson, 27, of San Mateo both face murder charges for the death of Christopher Chastain. According to the district attorney's office, on the night of April 10, 2011, the 6-foot-5 Chastain was allegedly stabbed, beaten with a pipe wrench and suffocated after an argument at Vargas's parents' house on Cypress Avenue. Both Vargas and Thompson have entered not guilty pleas. But the trial has been delayed because Vargas entered an insanity plea and doctors were ordered to evaluate his mental health at the time of the …

The Japanese embassy official who was recently arrested for allegedly beating his wife in San Bruno pleaded not guilty Monday to domestic violence charges. Yoshiaki Nagaya, 32, the vice consul for Japan in the country's embassy in San Francisco, appeared in the San Mateo County courthouse in South San Francisco and pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of domestic violence for allegedly beating his wife repeatedly while they lived in San Francisco and San Bruno. He also pleaded not guilty to several counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Nagaya was then released on $350,000 bail. His bail was previously set at $25,000. A vice consul for Japan is facing 13 counts of domestic violence for allegedly beating his wife repeatedly while they lived in San Francisco and San Bruno. Yoshiaki Nagaya, 32, and his wife, currently San Bruno residents, have been married for nearly 18 months. Nagaya, who works for the consulate general of Japan in San Francisco, was recently arrested after his wife went to San Bruno police, claiming months of domestic abuse over the course of their new marriage. According to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, Nagaya stabbed his wife in the hand with a screwdriver, knocked out her tooth, stomped on her and threw her out of a car. Five of the people arrested in connection with the South San Francisco 2010 triple homicide are from San Bruno. The charges against them and more than a dozen people include murder, conspiracy and racketeering.
The majority of the 19 people who were arrested in connection with the 2010 shooting in South San Francisco that killed three young men pleaded not guilty to federal charges today. Of the 15 defendants who made their first appearance in U.S. District Court in this case today before Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero, 13 pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from obstruction of justice, murder in aid of racketeering and racketeering. Two others, Richard Martinez, 25, and Andrew Bryant, 29, deferred pleas until their attorneys could appear with them.
