Senator Leland Yee's office is concerned about large discrepancies found in officials' income figures as reported by different sources.
The press release was delivered to us Thursday about mid-afternoon with a bold headline: "University officials refuse to answer inquiries, say it’s unnecessary to respond to public scrutiny" The release came from Adam Keigwin, Chief of Staff in the office of Senator Leland Yee. It made for some pretty interesting reading. According to Keigwin: "Records show officials from the California State University system are failing to fully disclose the compensation of several of their top executives." The Chief of Staff suggests "there are major compensation discrepancies when comparing IRS filings (Form 990) to records at the State Controller’s office and what CSU discloses on their website or in public records requests. In several cases, top …

San Bruno Patch gets a tour of the new building with art teacher Maria Sky, who spearheaded the project.
Capuchino High School recently held a grand opening for its new arts building, a $6 million project that was paid for with Measure M and grant funding as well as money from the San Mateo Union High School District. The completely redone building is both functional and visually appealing, and the school hopes it will pave the way for the next generation of great artists from San Bruno. The parents who have been heading up the effort to start a task force geared toward preventing future school closures decided that working independently of the San Bruno Park School District Board would help solve the problem.
On Tuesday, a group of concerned community members gathered to discuss and strategize their options regarding the S.O.S. committee that was originally created by board member Jennifer Blanco. During this meeting, there were many topics debated, ranging from the long term vs. short term objectives of the district, the current state of the administration, the superintendent's job performance and the level of the board's participation in the S.O.S. committee. At the end of the meeting, it was decided that the San Bruno Park School District board could do whatever it would like as far as its version of the S.O.S committee. The parents at this meeting had decided that we wanted to be fully dissolved from the school board, both in the S.O.S …
A debate ensued at Wednesday's special school board meeting about whether it would be fiscally responsible for the district to hire another district administrator when teachers and other school staff were recently given pink slips.
Wednesday's school board discussion about possibly hiring a new assistant superintendent exposed further mistrust that has been growing between the community and top school officials. San Bruno Park School District Superintendent David Hutt made a recommendation to the board that more administrative support was needed again at the district office because the district could be run more effectively with a dedicated employee overseeing programs such as special education, attendance, curriculum, professional development and student discipline. Many of those tasks had been previously handled by an assistant superintendent. But ever since former Associate Superintendent Lynn Orong resigned in December, Hutt has been assuming most of those roles …

The principal cited his desire not to run more than one school next year as his reason for leaving Crestmoor Elementary at the end of the year.
The principal of Crestmoor Elementary, who just started this school year after the previous principal left, is resigning from his position at the end of the year, San Bruno Patch has learned. Principal Ryan Haven cited personal reasons for his upcoming departure from the San Bruno Park School District. He said his decision was based on the fact that he was asked to run two elementary schools next year, which wouldn't allow him to responsibly balance his work life and his family. "As a parent of young children, I must carefully balance what I take on professionally with my number one priority: playing an active role as a husband and father," Haven said in a letter today addressed to parents. "In addition, I needed to consider which …

The idea was recently brought up to form another advisory committee that would figure out how to prevent future school closures. However, there are different opinions about whom should be allowed on the committee and what role it will play.
The San Bruno Park School Board has called a special meeting today to finish discussing several items that were tabled last week. The board members were supposed to consider taking action on creating a Save Our Schools committee, which was proposed after the school board voting against closing any schools in April. The committee's purpose would be to figure out how to prevent future school closures. But the board decided to delay having the discussion after last week's meeting lasted for four hours. Today's discussion will focus on how the committee would work if the board decided to create it. Outside of the school district, parents have already begun to meet to figure out how they would want to committee to be run. When schools trustee …

A San Bruno Patch investigation has found that the San Bruno Park School District superintendent has received four raises over the 10 years he has been employed with the district.
The superintendent for the San Bruno Park School District has been making $132,138 a year, plus benefits, since 2009, documents obtained by San Bruno Patch show. When health benefits and retirement costs are factored in, Superintendent David Hutt's total compensation is $163,330. Additionally, he also is allowed reimbursement for $3,000 in expenses—a payment that has fluctuated over the years during his tenure as the district's top administrator. With the recent controversy over Hutt's proposal to close Crestmoor and El Crystal elementary schools—a necessary step, he claimed, because of declining revenue and an expected drop in student enrollment in the coming years—parents and teachers have demanded to see the books on Hutt. Many have …

The new committee is being formed to attempt to address income and budget issues in the San Bruno Park School District.
By now, most of us are aware of the continuing budget issues that the San Bruno Park School district is facing. After dealing with the long running DDAC committee and then the possibility of closing two schools and even sharing principals, most of us are painfully aware by now of the upcoming budget shortfall that the district will (and continue) to face in the next several months. During the meeting of the San Bruno Park Board of Trustees on April 17, a Save Our Schools committee was created to take a look at ways to help the district increase revenue. The original intent of this committee was to work with the district to identify and execute of funding opportunities to support education. It was to consist of community members with some …

In a letter addressed to the school board, Parkside Intermediate's administrators said they haven't been able to properly prepare for next school year because the school district has failed to provide the school with basic resources.
Parkside Intermediate made a bold statement to the San Bruno Park School District today, demanding that the school board postpone the planned move of sixth graders to the middle school next year because of a breakdown in communication. In a letter sent anonymously to San Bruno Patch, Parkside’s principal and assistant principal said the delay was necessary because the school district has failed to agree upon a calendar for next school year and no sixth grade teachers have been assigned to the school yet. The school also just lost its only female custodian, which the letter said is a major concern and a broken promise from top district officials. “When you look at Parkside moving into the future we have new buildings, a new infrastructure …

One reason for the discrepancy would be benefits that aren't salary. And some of those benefits would be taxable -- hence the higher figures. So we need more info, which for our public servants is public information, so I don't know what little game the CSU chancellor and Sen. Lee are playing.   more ›
